You might think your significant other cheated because he/she is just an idiot, but research shows otherwise.
Here are 5 of the top reasons why partners cheat in a relationship:
1. Loss of emotional, mental, or physical attraction to current partner.
The beginning of your relationship was strong, unbreakable, and fulfilling. Somehow, somewhere down the line, there has been a loss of attraction. Whether it’s emotional, mental, or physical, this lack of connection has driven your lover to seek it elsewhere.
2. Lack of intimacy or sexual satisfaction from current relationship.
If you’re dating or married to someone who doesn’t satisfy your needs, then this could certainly contribute to finding satisfaction from somebody else. This is certainly not an excuse for cheating (nor is anything else on this list), but it is recognized as one of the biggest contributors as to why someone may cheat.
3. Found a better connection with someone else.
If you did a reverse cell phone lookup online and found out that John/Melanie from work’s phone number is actually a side piece, this is a very common occurrence and you’re not alone.
How many times have you heard the “it isn’t you, it’s me” line? Sometimes it really isn’t personal — sometimes they just find a stronger bond with another person (not that this makes the act of cheating acceptable!).
4. Low sense of self-control and/or self-esteem.
A weak mind or heart can lead to instances of infidelity in many relationships. Due to a lack of self-control or self-esteem, they are blinded by an attraction and act upon it. If the opportunity arises, some simply just cannot resist, even if your partnership is on the line.
5. Feelings of neglect or inadequacy.
This can stem internally from the relationship or externally. Whether s/he feels neglected sexually or in regard to attention, affection, or otherwise, this void is why many people cheat. Since they don’t receive it from their current S/O, they seek that attention elsewhere, ultimately leading to disloyalty.
